Garrison's leopard cats

If you are reading these in chronological order you may be curious as to the identity of the "baby wild cats" Luke referred to that I saw while Luke was toiling far below with the porters.  They were two baby leopard cats and a mama.  Yeah, that's right, I had leopard cat kittens (cubs?) playing at my feet for at least five minutes.  The truth of the matter is I have felt really guilty about it because I have been in Luke's position with other cats (jaguar) and back then I was really crushed that I missed seeing it.  On those long freezing nights I spent slowly feeling my lungs fill with fluid while trapped in my tent (once 35 out of 40 hours) I dreamed about gloating about my cats to my brother and my parents.  I apologize in advance, I will probably be insufferable for months.  Fortunately, I have awesome photos and videos of my experience so you can share in my sighting. Unfortunately, my amazing photos and videos are stuck on my camera and can't be uploaded just yet.  Our guides were excited and a bit scared by my story, at least initially.  I never got a great view of the mother but she never looked that big. Our guides who heard the calls the babies made and watched the video called what I saw "tigers" (I can't remember the Nepali word they use but they think the English word is tiger).  They told me that they are very dangerous animals and kill kids in Nepal.  Based on this info I thought the babies were real leopards and since I never got a great view of the mother I believed that for quite a while.  After comparing photos it is quite clear they were leopard cats which are much smaller (but the kittens are the same size).  So I made a pretty big mistake in identifying them as leopards but it was only because our guides looked at the photos and told me so.  Right now I can share some of Luke's iPhone photos but you will have to wait a bit for the cat photos

  1. I'm eagerly looking forward to both the leopard photos and the gloating! Thanks for the update and the photos. I'm relieved to hear you were able to get down to lower elevation before your lungs got too bad!
